What the Law of Chastity REALLY is8:57:00 AM
Right. So as a Christian, we are often told to be chaste and to obey the Law of Chastity. As a BYU student, this is especially drilled into our heads because breaking it would not only be a sin (a sin that the Atonement can wash away, by the way), but it could be grounds for dismissal from the University due to the honor code that students sign before coming/agree to follow annually during their ecclesiastical endorsement interviews. Clearly, it's very important, but the problem is that most people don't really understand it.
So what do we know about the Law of Chastity? You shouldn't have sex before marriage. Got it. But it's really not just that.
Can married individuals still break the Law of Chasity, you might ask? Yes!! Can single people break the Law of Chastity without having sex? Yes!!
Because, fundamentally, the Law of Chastity is the respect for other souls because of their divine nature from their Heavenly Father. When you are married and doin' the dirty, if you are only concerned about how self-gratifying that is for you, you are breaking the Law of Chastity. Now, I'm not saying that you can't enjoy sex, because that's ridiculous, and in the Latter-day Saint religion, there seems to be some confusion around that subject. You absolutely positively 100% are allowed to enjoy having sex. Sex does not have to exist solely for procreation, because it is one of the most significant ways for a couple to come closer together and closer to God. But while having sex (isn't it funny that I'm talking about this when I very much have never had sex and I am not married? But just trust me), you are expressing your love for your spouse and becoming whole and complete as a couple. You can enjoy that, but really, the priority of the action is showing your unconditional, perfect love for the other. If you are just focusing on yourself and how you feel, you are breaking the Law of Chastity.
In this same respect, single individuals can break the Law of Chastity without even having sex. Yes, the Law of Chastity does relate to the fact that "God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife." But friends: if you are making out, and once again, all you are focusing on is how enjoyable that is for you, you are breaking the Law of Chastity.
I'm not trying to guilt trip y'all into confessing to your Bishop and clearly I'm not the Prophet, but just try and keep these things in mind, because the Law of Chastity applies to everyone, regardless of their relationship status. We will all have to obey the Law of Chastity into the eternities, so we may as well do it right.
