The Truth About Makeup

August 24, 2016

A few years ago makeup aficionado/my best friend Alex took me to Ulta upon my request and chose makeup for me to use (because at 19 I still had no idea what I was doing (to be fair I wasn't allowed to wear makeup until I was like 16 or something) and honestly I still don't know what I'm doing). Guys, I have been using the same makeup (well not the same, I've bought replacements, because I hear that's a thing that you should do) ever since.

My freshman year of college, this jerk kid told me that I shouldn't wear a baggy sweatshirt (like I'm gonna listen to you about that!!) and should wear makeup, or no boys would like me. My sophomore year I took this into consideration and made sure that I always looked more than presentable. This last school year, I lost a lot of motivation and effort due to many factors in life including the fact that I like to sleep more than I like to put on makeup. I very very very rarely wore makeup. But that was kind of fun because...
I got to dress up for dates by putting eyeliner on and when I had absolutely no desire to spend 20 minutes trying to get my wings to match, then I would just go completely without. I've had people tell me that I should wear makeup more or that I look so good with eyeliner (I mean I'm not arguing with them, because I am pretty cute) but most of the time I don't want to, and that's okay.
Yeah, I mean part of me wishes that I was a guy because society tells them they look hot without makeup and women need it, but also part of me is glad I'm a woman because I can wear makeup without being judged.

I don't care if you spend two hours doing your makeup every day and you know how to contour yourself with a biscuit (this isn't a thing but I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it was). I have a lot of respect for you. I don't care if you never wear makeup and never will because hashtag the patriarchy. I don't care if you just sometimes want to but sometimes don't and you don't know who you're voting for in the upcoming election (because same). I don't care if you're a man or a woman. If you want to wear makeup and it makes you feel good about yourself, then you do you. If you don't want to wear makeup and that makes you feel good about yourself, then you do you. Let's just collectively stop judging people and also can we maybe make makeup cheaper?? because MAC I cannot afford y'all's $17 a tube lipstick.

Yours truly,
McKay
