Things That Happen When You're a Girl With a Boy's Name

March 31, 2017

My mother's logic was that, and I quote, "Girls can have weird names because they won't get made fun of, but boys can't." That's why my brother is one of many Davids of this world, and I have only ever met one other girl McKay before. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. I actually really like my name. I jokingly say that I want to marry someone whose first name is McKay so we can have a joint Facebook account and not have to do the weird SoandSo name. I also jokingly say that I want to marry someone whose last name is McKay so my name can be McKay McKay. I have not gotten anywhere near achieving either of those things, but I just wanted to share with y'all a couple of things I've experienced having a boy's name when I am very much a girl.
My friend Amber often unknowingly uses me to make boys jealous. She has told me on many occasions that boys will see her getting a text from "McKay" and think that she's talking to some other guy. My friend wanted to go on a date with a guy once and he asked her to set up his friend, but he got a little confused when she said McKay was coming with because he was under the impression that she was going on a date with him, not me (which she was, clearly).
There have been multiple occasions when I have gone into job interviews and the hiring manager was expecting a boy. In an interesting turn of events, one time I was being interviewed by a boy Kelly when I was expecting a girl, and he was naturally expecting a boy McKay (we had a good laugh).

Yours truly,
(a girl) McKay
