My #2017BestNine

December 27, 2017

W O W. 2017, what an ABSOLUTELY CRAP year! It did not go at all according to plan and it was so so difficult to stay afloat. There was a lot of misfortune for me personally and awful things that happened around the world.
But here I am! I would not have been able to do it without these people, many trips to Swig, and lots and lots of naps. Here's my self-made #2017BestNine (in no particular order):
-
1. Jamison: You have kept me laughing through the hardships and the pain. You have been there by my side without hesitation. You have loved me when I needed it most and I was so lucky to have met you this year. #ThanksMutual
-
2. Fonzie and I have officially been together for a year! He is the best emotional support animal and the best friend (even if he sometimes wakes me up at 5:00 AM just because he wants to cuddle).
-
3. I walked (four months late) at the BYU commencement with my family and Jamison (who didn't even know me when I was in college but sat through a needlessly long ceremony anyways) cheering me on. I loved getting to show my parents and David around my college stomping grounds (because I'm an old fart now). This was also the last time I saw my father in person before he passed away so I am grateful for the time that I was able to spend with him in Utah.
-
4. Alex: I got to see my best friend who has lived across the country from me for TEN YEARS again (it's been three years since the last time). It was a hot mess of a trip but there is nobody else I'd want to fight over EQUAL SPACE on the bed with (I'm looking at you, girl). Thanks for living in the same state as Disney World and for being the best friend a girl could ask for.
-
5. Ali Bug: I cherish the little time each year I get to see Ali. I am so lucky because I saw her TWICE this year! Her family so graciously invited me to Salt Lake Comic Convention's #FanX17 where I met Weird Al and Bonnie Wright. I also got to see Ali and her mom, Donna present at #pinnersconf. How am I so lucky to know these gals?
-
6. Alyssa: Alyssa is my friend more than my boyfriend's sister. She is so compassionate and good-hearted. I am so so in love with ALL of Jamison's family and how welcoming and loving they have been to me since the moment I met them.
-
7. Mandy: Wow, I am so glad we got introduced. You are a beautiful gem and you are so different from anyone that I know. Thanks for being my friend while we were both unemployed and for staying my friend now that we both seem too busy to function. I love you.
-
7. Katie, Emilie, and Amelia: Thanks for letting me inconvenience y'all all summer. You are all so kind, generous, and patient. Can you say dream team of roommates? Speaking of roommates, Matt and Mel: thanks for letting me crash with y'all and Walter while I was homeless! You are good people.
-
9. Bec: Thank you for trusting me. Thanks for letting me tag along to Disneyland for my first time with you and Mandy. Thank you for being an example of bravery. You are a beaut, Beggie. I am proud of you and I'm rooting for you.

And y'all, I want to say how proud I am of MYSELF. After 2015, I didn't think I could survive just about anything else. And here I am. Don't get me wrong - just about every. single. day. is hard for me. I'm starting to feel like my whole life is a rough patch. I miss my sister and my dad. I'm worried about my mom and my brother. I only get small glimpses of happiness but I do my best to hold on to those. I am lucky to be loved by so many of y'all. Even though it often feels like everything that can go wrong in my life goes wrong, I would be stupid to ignore the good in my life. I am a lot more blessed than many people in the world and for that I am grateful.
Here's to hoping that 2018 is a h*ck of a lot better for all of us!

Yours truly,
McKay
